影片承袭朱自清同名散文的父爱主题以父爱为主要线索，制服用电影的方式讲述一个生动的亲情故事。九十年代一个贫困的小山村。十二岁的少女春秀早年丧母，制服与父亲和瘫痪在床的奶奶相依为命。父亲罹患肺癌，只有短暂的生命，所以他与桂兰结婚，希望在自己离世后，将春秀托孤给她。可是没想到，桂兰在嫁过来前早已患上子宫癌，也不于人世，并且有和桂兰爹一样的目的。开始，他们相互隐瞒了自己的目的，但在三个月的共同生活中，双方都各自发现了对方的秘密，谁也没有说破。出于对孩子真挚而崇高的爱，父亲决定坚守这个秘密。没多久，桂兰和父亲病故，春秀用她羸弱的双肩，代替父亲肩起了一家的重担。本片所有演员均启用非职业演员。

It is more memorable than Julien Duvivier's earlier silent version of 1925, also named Poil de Carotte.The part of Poil de Carotte was played by 11 year old Robert Lynen, who was alleged to have been discovered whilst walking down the Champs-Elysées in Paris. Lynen is totally captivating and the film made him an instant star, launching what looked like becoming a very promising film career – until he was shot dead whilst fighting against the Germans in 1944. Harry Baur, a legendary stage and film actor (who also died during World War II, allegedly at the hands of the Gestapo), also turns in a typically fine performance. The reconciliation between father and son at the end of the film provides its most enduring image, enough to melt the heart of all but the most stoical of spectators.
